Chipset is Realtek RTL8192CU Download link: PROS: Works well once installed CONS: Dual band would be nice, but Monoprice does not offer any dual band devices. Drivers didn't install automatically on every machine I tried. Some worked, but not others, oddly enough. Drivers were not readily available on Monoprice website. Found a download link only after contacting support and having them do some serious digging. I'll upgrade my previous rating of '1' to a '4'.

It can't fit in the back next to a VGA connector. I had to rearrange USB devices and can only install it by blocking an adjacent USB port. Smaller is better.and this ain't it.

An USB hub or extension cord is required if you only have one port open, or if you are in tight quarters. Poor out-of-box experience with this.

Had to start a second session with another rep to get the actual Realtek model number so I could download the driver myself. A real waste of time, and makes me think poorly of Monoprice as a supplier and a brand. This is a re-brand of Realtek RTL8192CU. I really wish Monoprice would provide the drivers, or at least educate tech support on how to give the correct drivers to customers.
I read through many of the counter-posts in this review section. Seems like 'Monoprice Administrator' is pushing the tech support back onto the customer by asking us to try different ports, different OS, and even trying different computers in order to make an $11 NIC work properly. A simple, quick link to the drivers is free.
It boggles the mind why a company would hide that info from paying customers, and require a tech support chat session.or two. CONS: Blocks other ports.
Not 'plug and play'. No support info available without multiple tech support chat sessions. Requires existing internet connection or a second computer + SneakerNet to install. Like a young kid, I ripped into the packaging and then proceded to insert the USB stick directly into the computer (HP i5 Desktop running Windows 7) hoping it would automatically recognize and just start working.
Wrong, wrong, wrong! This is one of those that you MUST read the directions on. However, even after reading and following the directions, it still did not work. Mind you, my tech level is pretty high, I've worked in IT for more than 20 yrs. The software on the mini-cd offers 4 different choices for the installation, and I tried all 4, but none seemed to do the trick. I even tried manually installing and having Windows search for the drivers on the CD, which it found, but still would not work. Finally, I plugged the PC back in to a hard wired connection and then had it search for drivers on the Internet, which seemed to do the trick.
This truly seems to be one of those cases of 'you get what you pay for'. I still love Monoprice, but this was one of the least satisfying purchases I've made from here. PROS: Get what you pay for.
CONS: Very Difficult to setup. These mono price USB wireless N adapters are great everywhere else I looked for a similar device they wanted $89 Install is a breeze on any windows machine or Mac.
Nb 802.11 G Driver For Mac
Linux is a little tougher but can be done. When we first got our gigabit router i was told that any device attached to the network that couldnt handle N speed would drop the speed of the network to what that device could handle. So I looked aroud for wireless N USB adapters to give our older laptops a leg up and keep our gigabit network running as fast as it could. Again the price on these cant be beat and they work very well!
PROS: Low price works great gives older devices wireless N capabilities works on Windows, Mac and Linux CONS: tough to install on linux. I initially rated poorly this product because the one that was delivered to me had manufacturing malfunction. After contacting the customer service, I quickly receive another device which works pretty well this time. This a great product that just works out of the box and provides increased wireless range to your PCs. And did I mention hat Monoprice customer and technical services are among the best I ever have to deal with?
